It was the way you leaned against the crate door so that I could sneak my fingers through and pet you just a little that won me over. Your hugs sealed the deal and we made a pack to run together as long as we could. We had ten great years together, buddy, and my heart is broken now that you're gone. You were the most gentle soul I'd ever met.

You were always my sidekick, for trips to the cabin or just staying home and being together. I'm so thankful for your presence and I hope mine was a comfort to you as well. Even though we were so independent, we both needed each other. I looked forward to coming home every day and seeing your bright eyes greet me. We will all miss your funny pony hops and your smile.

Even though you were 15 and everyone said that was "old," I didn't see it. We were just growing old together, that's all. You were shaky and I could tell you were in pain on Friday when you couldn't lay down anymore. Your back had given out and I didn't want you to be in that much pain. I wasn't ready to say goodbye, buddy, but you go and find a nice sunny spot to rest in. You deserve it. You won the race….

Sweet dreams, my precious boy,

Love, Dad
