Renewed Life for Greyhounds

We had arranged for the assistance to the infamous “Rainbow Bridge” on the Friday of Labor Day., however, the time became more appropriate seven days prior to our original plan. We thought we were prepared as this was the inevitable, but you can never be too prepared. We had come to recognize our beloved Janny’s chronic renal failure as being more severe and was progressing more rapidly. Her symptoms were gingerly managed for over two years and eventually her kidneys stopped filtering blood poisons.
The unexpected day was blessed with sunny warmth and dry air, just as Janny liked. We prepared a dinner of cooked hamburger and dog treats. She nibbled and was coached to eat which confirmed our decision even further. We gave her a minor oral sedative used only during severe thunderstorms and petted her with love along with our other greyhound, Boss.
We then took her to the veterinarian’s office. She so enjoyed the ride while sitting in the back of the SUV on soft blankets and warm breeze blowing at her face. Once we arrived, we walked the scented grounds and she marked territory for the last time. The vet came out to the car where she loved to ‘ride’. We held her and comforted her as best we could until the last and final beat of her palpable heart. This effort of final comfort was nothing compared to the years of unconditional love she brought to our lives.
We will miss her kind gentle kisses, her enjoyment to snuggle, her bursts of impromptu urges to play and run around the living room furniture, her excited bark when the word “walk” or “ride” was mentioned among many other quirks we adored about her. Boss, her best friend, will miss his ears being licked, his bed being shared and his toys being stolen.
Her daily contributions to our lives along with her loving companionship to Boss will be forever missed and remembered. We would like to thank everyone who took care of her and contributed in some way in bringing ‘Janny-girl’ into our lives. Her commemorative statue of a life-sized greyhound lives in one of our perennial gardens to help us heal through time without her.
